Nano
Nano, an extraordinary creation by American designer Marc Northstar, seamlessly blends artistic mastery with the innovation of biotechnology. Nestled in San Francisco's thriving biotech hub, this artwork has become an integral part of the community, offering inspiration to investors, innovators, and passersby alike. Perched on a specially constructed south-facing wall, Nano reflects the vibrant energy of the region’s biotech landscape, visible even from the heights of passing airplanes.
Commissioned by HealthPeak Properties, Nano reflects the vibrant energy of the region’s biotech landscape while embodying Evidence-Based Design (EBD) principles to maximize its visual, psychological, and environmental impact. Perched on a specially constructed south-facing wall, the artwork’s placement was informed by daylight analysis and sightline studies, ensuring optimal visibility from the plaza, surrounding streets, and even passing airplanes.
The composition of Nano responds to both the building’s architectural language and Fletcher Studio’s landscape design, creating a harmonious dialogue between art and environment. Through EBD, every design choice—from scale and color to the placement of “breathing lines” and negative space—was guided by research on occupant perception, biophilic engagement, and psychological well-being. Shades of green were strategically selected to complement the spring foliage, reinforcing a calming, inspiring atmosphere in the plaza.
Incorporating various shades of green inspired by the surrounding spring foliage and burgeoning plaza growth, Marc faced the challenge of composing negative space for openness and breathability. The mid-process stage, marked by muted hues on a misty morning, brought forth 'breathing lines' that infused life into the canvas.
The construction process of 'Nano' transcended the mundane; it became a symphony of silence, creating a serene environment during its final phases. Marc's dedication unfolded in moments of scrutiny, both from a distance and up close, as he actively engaged with clients and team members, shaping the complex form with precision.

Blessed with an idyllic, sun-kissed day, Marc deftly navigated the surface of his canvas, strategically applying light green hues to various zones throughout the day. These ethereal washes, when viewed from a distance, were scarcely perceptible. And a jump of happiness did not hurt but bring joy to the artist!
On April 27, 2023, the journey culminated as Marc signed Nano, marking the completion of a collective effort. He presented the very brush used to create the work to Isabel Perez Ferado of Project Management Advisors, Inc., symbolizing the shared achievement of the entire team.
Nano stands as a testament to collaboration and innovation, made possible through partnerships with Fletcher Studio, HealthPeak Properties, FLAD Architects, Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Co., and Project Management Advisors, Inc. It is more than just a piece of art—it is a symbol of the limitless possibilities at the intersection of creativity and biotechnology.
